Most railway sleepers we see today are produced using the pre-tensioned prestressed concrete method: first, the prestressing steel bars (or steel strands) are tensioned to the specified force and temporarily anchored; then, concrete is poured. Once the concrete has cured to the design strength, the restraint on the steel bars is released, completing the stress release process.
